DoloRose series. 2022.

Piece 1. Commitement.

Size: 76x11x5 cms.

Technique: Handfelted wool

Materials: Corriedale/merino wool.

This handmade felt piece represents a knot not yet totally tied, but to close it -or to unknot it- your hands bleed.
The deep, concious commitment with your work, goals, aims, ideas, values, dreams … is a long-term proccess, a long and winding road, an exhausting and hard path, never effortless, is a hard work always in progress, creating an intimate bond with yourself and your life.

Piece 2. Crying together.

Size: 5 pieces of 8”x 8” women handkerchiefs.

Materials: Leicester raw undyed wool, silk strands, mouliné cotton thread, love.

Technique: wet felting, embroidery.

The poem by John Doyle Meditations XVII, (1624) describes how we ourselves are particles, we are small, every one different but all of us worthy, we are inexorably part of a “collective being” made up of all of us: mankind…these words resonate so heavily and sadly nowadays, in the beginning of a new war.

These symbolic handkerchiefs are materially useless, as they are delicate, not absorbent, with no hems…but they are made of sincere feelings and their objective is to give some comfort, to virtually cry together, to make us feel accompanied through these rough moments, to feel us together in the distance, to share worries, to remind us of our fragility…

Each one of the participants in the BONFIRE residency (February-April 2022) has received a handkerchief as an independent particle, with one letter from the words Olga´s (an ukranian residency participant) embroidered, and all together we can weave an invisible but strong matter in which we hope we can rely, called humanity.

Piece 3. A rose is a rose isn´t a rose…is a rose?

Size: 20x20x8cms.

Technique: Knotted handfelted wool.

Materials: corriedale/merino wool, silk, upholstery nails, golden thread.

Gertrude Stein´s famous line “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose” from Sacred Emily, construed as «things are what they are», changes slightly to generate the doubt that things are immovable…now they are no longer as they seemed.
The rose is the synthesis of the eternal and the perishable. This dualism remains through all transition processes and makes us hope that change will always be possible.

Piece 4. Dal rosa mel apibus; (“A Rose gives honey to the bee”)

Size:136x18x8 cms.

Technique: Knotted hand felted wool, embroidery.

Materials: merino wool, silk strands, sewing pins, silver thread.

The title is an engraving from “Summum Bonum” by R. Fludd, who believed that each plant grown on earth has an equivalent star in cosmos; so there is an intrinsic connecting bond between microcosm (Earth) and macrocosm (Heavens).
The rose, a symbol of the soul, is a metaphor for eternity– it refers to life´s ephemeral nature and also to the human choice of his/her own path, between heaven and earth.
